Celebrating Rotary Passion at SevenStock
Every fall, enthusiasts of Mazda’s legendary rotary engines gather in Southern California for SevenStock, widely recognized as the world’s largest annual rotary engine festival. Organized meticulously by the SoCal RX Club, this event has transformed from humble beginnings into a vibrant spectacle that attracts hundreds of rotary-powered vehicles and thousands of fans from across the globe. It’s not just a car show; it’s a celebration of a unique engineering marvel that has defined Mazda’s heritage for decades.
Marking Over Two Decades of Rotary Enthusiasm
The 2023 edition marked an impressive 25 years of SevenStock’s existence, standing as a testament to the enduring appeal of Mazda’s rotary engines. As newcomers, we felt privileged to attend this milestone event, having followed its evolution since the early 2000s when it gained momentum and recognition within the automotive community. Over the years, the festival has been hosted at various iconic Southern California venues—ranging from Griffith Park and Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas to the Mazda R&D Center and Mazda’s U.S. headquarters in Irvine, where the legendary Mazda 787B race car was showcased. More recently, the event shifted to prominent venues like Auto Club Speedway in Fontana and Irwindale Speedway, reflecting its growing stature.
Experiencing SevenStock: Our Journey
A chance encounter with SevenStock’s organizers during a Mazda event in Japan sparked our curiosity and desire to witness this extraordinary gathering firsthand. Meeting the dedicated SevenStock team at a recent event in Japan, just weeks before the festival, made it a natural decision to attend their flagship gathering in Southern California. Traveling from Florida to California for the event’s 25th anniversary was a rewarding experience, immersing us in a world where rotary engines are revered and celebrated.
The show’s layout is thoughtfully organized around Mazda rotary car models and eras. On one side, early rotary models like the RX-2, RX-3, RX-4, and REPU trucks from the 1970s are displayed, illustrating Mazda’s pioneering efforts in rotary technology. Conversely, the opposite area showcases the evolution of the RX-7, from its first to third generations, along with the RX-8, highlighting Mazda’s continuous innovation in rotary engineering.
Highlights and Unique Finds at SevenStock
If you’re passionate about Mazda rotary cars, choosing highlights from such an epic event can be daunting. While we have a soft spot for the iconic FD RX-7s, our real fascination lies in the diverse range of vintage Mazda rotary vehicles and pickups displayed. Seeing pristine first-generation SA and FB RX-7s, the sleek third-generation FD RX-7s, and the modern RX-8s on the streets back home is common, but encountering rare models like the Mazda RX-3 coupes and wagons, as well as REPU trucks, was truly special. The event also featured a broad spectrum of modified and stock FC RX-7 coupes, alongside a growing number of FC RX-7 convertibles, which appear increasingly popular today.
For any rotary enthusiast, JDM aficionado, or classic car lover, SevenStock offers an unmatched experience—showcasing the historic, the modified, and the innovative Mazda rotary marvels all in one place. It’s a festival that not only celebrates engineering excellence but also fosters a sense of community among rotary fans worldwide.
